What is more southern than biscuits? Having been all over the American south I’ve tasted my fair share from Savannah to Nashville and plenty besides. Alabama has a special twist up its sleeve on the scene, their cocoa biscuits are a regional specialty. You can’t find them too frequently outside of an Alabama mama’s kitchen, trust me I searched menus far and wide to track down this dish. It was nowhere to be found, except at the Blue Plate Café in Huntsville.
You have to visit over the weekend. Their menu says the cocoa biscuits are only served on Saturdays, but I called and they promised me they make them on Sundays too. The large room was packed for breakfast, but service was great. We were given waters and coffees quick, our orders taken as soon as we were ready. The cocoa biscuits were everything I could have hoped for.
Hot, crisp, moist, buttery biscuits halves were topped with a thick and stay-put chocolate sauce that tasted like my childhood. This is a surefire reason to visit Alabama! With your sweet biscuits, savory biscuits go nicely. A biscuit bacon egg and cheese sandwich wasn’t on the menu, but the staff had no problems creating this delectable dish.
You can’t beat this southern comfort food for the most magical weekend breakfast.
