Between bustling Wilmington and popular Myrtle Beach is a quieter world, a timeless one. Oak Island Beach isn’t a household name, and that’s a good thing. It keeps it quiet, only for locals and those in the know. This is a natural beach with lush dunes.
From one of the many access points along residential side streets a short boardwalk takes you on to the sand. The beaches stretches for miles, if you plan on walking away from where you entered, you can easily remember what street you came in on because signs are posted.
Mercer Street had easy parking and since it was a bit of away pier there were less people around. If you enjoy company, there is always more action closer to that nostalgic pier.
The beach is south facing so the water isn’t as clear as you might find in other surrounded areas, but the current is lesser and better for swimming.
Plenty of wildlife calls this shore home. If you come during the right season, you have a chance to see loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings. Shore birds are abundant and ghost crabs love playing hide and seek.
Oak Island allows dogs on the beach if you respect the leash laws. Slow down and enjoy life in this sleepy little beach town.
You’ll love it! Enjoy.
One to put on my list for the next trip south – Thanks!
