Brunswick Riverwalk, North Carolina

Just across the bridge from Wilmington is a short and interesting trail with much to offer. Currently, the Brunswick Riverwalk [580 River Road, Belville, NC 28451] has only 1/3 of mile walking trail, but it dreams big hoping to connect to downtown on a four mile trail.

A walk through the woods veers away from the road and towards the river.

From the boardwalk the views of the marsh and Brunswick River are sensational.

Delving back into the woods to complete the loop find a history lesson. The foundation of the Buchoi Plantation. In the 1700s it cultivated rice, North Carolina’s largest cash crop known as Carolina gold.

There is also a surprisingly nice picnic shelter equipped with ceiling fans.

Back at the parking lot (large and free) there is a playground for kids, boat access, and a swinging bench.

Nearby a gator sunned on the shore,

while an egret hunted in the shallows.

I am looking forward to seeing the progress of this park in the years to come. Even in its current small space it certainly packs a punch and just a few minutes from the city is worth visiting for some fresh air.
