Abbey Nature Preserve, Wilmington NC

A classic hike through the woods and around a lake, the two mile loop at Abbey Nature Preserve [10200 US-17, Wilmington, NC 28411] will leave you feeling forest refreshed.

Trails were once old farm roads and aren’t marked the best, but the area isn’t big enough to get lost in.

Hear woodpeckers and songbirds, admire the flora and watch for new sprouts.

The highlight is certainly the large lake dotted with cypress trees.

A sturdy bridge crosses it and in the middle you can spot many turtles and birds.

A rusty colored stream adds a splash of color.
