Þórufoss: The Hidden Gem Waterfall in Iceland’s Golden Circle

A waterfall with such vigor, it bares the name of the god Thor. Þórufoss often spelt as Thorufoss and it is a hidden gem in the Golden Circle. While hundreds flock to Gullfoss, we had this waterfall all to ourselves. It is a short detour from the main road, with a small gravel lot marked by a red sign.

You can’t see the falls from the road, but a short walk will lead you towards the river Laxá í Kjós where the cascade appears.

The drop is 54 feet with a width of 100’, and the water is great for salmon fishing. Walk along the cliffside for a closer look, but note that scrambling down to the base would be a slippery endeavor.

Þórufoss often freezes over the winter time, which would be a mighty sight.

Fun Fact: The waterfall was used as the home for the Children of the Forest in Game of Thrones.
