Greenhouse Dining in Iceland’s Golden Circle at Friðheimar

Despite the long dark winters, plump juicy tomatoes are grown year round in Iceland.

Friðheimar is a farm and restaurant which produces 18% of the country’s tomatoes, among cucumbers, peppers, and more.

It does so all year long by harnessing geothermal energy to power artificial lights for growing.

A tangle of vines grow up over ten feet tall and you can dine amongst them.

Take a break from the sights and the brisk air of the Golden Circle and stop by for lunch in the balmy Greenhouse.

The menu is based entirely around the fruit, from your starter soup all the way to dessert.

Go classic and order a cup of the signature tomato soup,

which comes with a humungous hunk of freshly baked bread.

Garnish the soup with a snip of basil and add sour cream for a thicker consistency. If you’re looking for a boozy lunch, there are some really fun tomato themed options.

Tomato beer brewed in house with fully ripe red tomatoes, tomato schnapps made of a hollow tomato and filled with Icelandic Birch schnapps, and a gang of Bloody Mary takes are all on the board. Try a Happy Mary made with green tomatoes for a twist, or go with the original touted as the best around.

Either way, don’t forget to spice it up with your favorite accoutrements at the Bloody Mary station!

Your meal isn’t complete without a tomato themed dessert, and they are truly mouthwatering. A cheesecake with green tomato jam was dreamy and delicious.

Green-tomato and apple pie was gorgeous and the flavors melded together so well.

There’s tomato ice cream too! You can take home tomato souvenirs and even stick around for a horse show – this farm is full of surprises.
