Off the Beaten Path in Iceland’s Golden Circle: Faxi Waterfall

Peaceful is not something often associated with the tremendously popular Golden Circle route, but you can find that feeling at the hidden gem Faxi Waterfall along with the beauty the region is beloved for.

Also known as Vatnsleysufoss and Horses Mane Falls, the water flows from the Tungufljót River. Just a quick drive off of the main road on a gravel track, you can park at an upper or lower lot see the sight, without even leaving your car.

I recommend doing both, and taking the short walk from one point to another allows you to take in the view of multiple angles. While it is merely 23 feet high, the waterfall spans a length of 262’, and you can walk right up to it! What makes this waterfall unique is the fish ladder that sits on its left bank, stay awhile and see the fish making their commute.

The river is flush with salmon and a popular place for locals to fish.

With the quiet nature of the waterfall, this is a perfect place to have a picnic. Or perhaps you’d like a warm drink, a café called Vid Faxa is right beside the falls and can help you with that. Faxi certainly wins the award for most off the beaten path sight in Golden Circle, we only shared this waterfall with a handful of other individuals in the middle of the afternoon.
