Riverplace Nature Trail Has the Highest Elevation Change in Austin

Austin, Texas isn’t known for it’s strenuous mountain hikes. It does however have some really nice rolling hills. The 2,736 steps in Riverplace Nature Trail means this hike has the highest elevation change in the city. If you complete the trail, you’ll climb 1,700’ over three miles – but this is not a loop. Save energy for the route back, making this a 6 mile hike in total. Start by the lake with the boardwalk and revel in this relaxation.

Take a moment to spot some turtles and other creatures that may be around. Learn about the history, flora, and fauna.

Then get your game face on and head into the densely wooded forest and start to tackle those stairs.

The Panther Hollow trail starts out gradual enough, admire some magnificent oaks along the way.

Cling to the edge of a cave.

If the creek is filled with water, consider taking the Little Fern trail spur to see some waterfalls.

Stones create a path to hop along and cross the creek without wetting your feet.

The trail is incredibly well marked and even alerts you of your current mileage, plus what’s ahead.

On the Canyon trail is where things really pick up the pace, and there is a pretty great view at the top waiting for you.

Be aware that no water or restrooms are available. You can access the hike from three trailheads.
