Barton Springs Pool & Barton Creek Greenbelt, Austin Texas

Barton Springs Pool

Year round swimming is available in Zilker Park, Barton Springs which feeds this natural pool remains at a constant refreshing temperature of 68-70 degrees.

Clear and enchanting emerald green, the depth of the pool ranges from a shallow area to wade up to over 15’. There are lap lanes and a diving board. The pool is home to the endangered Barton Springs salamander, if you wear goggles you may be able to see one at the designated area.

Barton Creek Greenbelt

Starting in Zilker Park and stretching over 7 miles to trails end at the Hill of Life is a path that follows the creek.

The flow of water is seasonal, generally only 1 to 2 months out of the year depending on rainfall. Sometimes it is high enough for swimming, cliff diving, kayaking, and tubing. Initially on the path the creek bed was dry.

Upon walking in a few miles a few shallow inches of water appeared.

Further still at Sculptured Falls was a deep green pool, perfectly inviting for a hot day.

Hopping about the limestone patterns semi-hidden beneath the water was captivating.

Some elevation change is found along the trail, with large limestone cliffs, rock climbing is possible.

Opportunity for spelunking is available as well, under guided exploration, in Airmen’s Cave which is the longest cave in Travis County. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife whether it be dung beetles, coyotes, or anything in between. There are multiple access points, parking is free. Note that there are no restrooms, trash disposal, or water fountains so plan accordingly.
