From eyesore to so much more, Sparky Park in Austin, Texas is just one of the shining examples of how a city can repurpose something like defunct electrical substation from 1930 for example, into a neighborhood destination.
In 2008 local artist Berthold Haas was hired for the job of creating this quirky pocket park. A conglomeration of objects make up a mosaic grotto wall. The primary building material is karst stone, giving an almost underwater like experience. Although seashells were used to perpetuate that idea, oddly enough they are made to be leaves on a tree.
From one angle you might fancy yourself in outer space with a mayhem of mirror balls and marbles.
Look closely for petrified wood, fossils, and found objects hidden in the crevices of this bizarre scene.
The park is not a big space with a playground or hiking trails, but an art instillation tucked into a residential neighborhood. A hidden gem you’d never run into if you weren’t out looking for it. You can go for a picnic, a photo shoot, or just a laugh – it is totally accessible and everyone is welcome, however no one was there.
Have a great time!
Very cool! I’ll put it on my list.
