Within a sea of agricultural fields in the Arkansas Delta, stands the natural oasis that is Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge.
Just 20 miles northwest of Memphis are over 5,000 acres of hardwood forest and cypress swamp.
This is a migration stop over on the Mississippi Flyway for neo-tropical birds, warblers, and waterfowl. There are over 260 species of birds in the preserve, you might see bright burst of color from an indigo bunting or a magnificent bald eagle.
In the winter season the gathering of waterfowl is particularly impressive, this is one of the last strong holds of the area to see such a large concentration of birds. Wapanocca Lake is home to towering old-growth bald cypress trees that create an otherworldly feeling.
There are 12 miles of well maintained gravel roads for wildlife viewing from the car, and you can get out to fish, hike, or kayak along the way.
