Alabama has had five capitals during its history as a state, but since 1846 it has been in Montgomery. The Alabama State Capitol is built in a Greek revival style and was completed in 1851. A few years later as the country fell into the Civil War, Montgomery would become the first capital of the Confederacy. Over one hundred years later, the march from Selma to Montgomery ended right at the stairs to this historic building.
The grounds are open for exploration filled with informational plaques and monuments. You can also join a guided tour on Saturdays or take a self guided tour during the week.
