Railroad Park in Birmingham, Alabama

In the heart of downtown Birmingham you can leave the busy vibe of the streets behind and recharge at Railroad Park.

The premiere public green space in Magic City is a little slice of nature that a metropolis so desperately craves. It is 30% water, the pond and creek attract many birds. Herons lurk above the wetlands.

Grackles investigate the shallow creek.

Ducks, frogs, and dragonflies soaked in the summer sunshine. Looping paths around the park can create miles for joggers. An outdoor work out station gives further fitness opportunities. The city’s mascot, a Roman God called Vulcan, makes an appearance – always looking out for his residents.

If you stay long enough, you may just see the train roll through the tracks which gives the park its name.

Kids will love watching the train go by, and playing on the two playgrounds in the park boundaries. Consider packing a picnic or grabbing a bite to eat at the Boxcar Café. Checking the calendar of events for the park is a good idea, because there are always exciting things happening. Free cooking classes, symphony concerts, and yoga are just a few of the great activities offered!
