The city of Birmingham is always looking up to Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge. This is symbolic due to its past industry developing iron and steel, but also literal on account of the massive 56’ statue that stands up on one of the highest hills.
It’s the highest cast iron statue in the world and has an elevator headed to the top where you can take in the city skyline from an observation deck. The statue sits outside of the Vulcan Museum which tells the tale of the god and the story of the city. Below, there is a wonderful path called the Vulcan Trail ripe for activity.
Whether you want to walk, jog, or bike it is flat and very comfortably made with asphalt and crusher rock.
At times the path is flanked with thick woods and local flora.
Other moments the woods open up to impressive views of the city below and its surrounding hills.
Regardless of whether you visit the museum, this path is a relaxed and scenic place to work off some of that delicious southern food.
