Just outside the city of Birmingham is a preserve filled with wonder. A hike along the twelve miles of trails at Moss Rock Preserve unfolds constant excitement!
The parking lot leads directly into the boulder gorge, a favorite place for local rock climbers.
Whether you’re ascending or just looking around at the base, this is an extremely unique geological area. Explore the various crevices and caves, on a hot day it is much cooler under the protective shade of the boulders.
Nestled into a corner of the rocks was a most special sight, a nest filled with baby phoebe birds.
Trekking away from the massive formations another bird was watching. A barred owl sat quietly contemplating those passing by.
Trails are marked well, so even if you aren’t familiar with the map they can lead you to points of interest and back to where you came from.
The flora of the park was just coming to life in early spring, bold with color.
Don’t miss visiting a waterfall in the park, while they aren’t too tall they are ever so lovely.
Even the tiniest of cascades had quirky personalities, sliding hard to the side, or under a small rock arch.
A quick evening visit just wasn’t enough time to see all of the fantastic sights in the park boundaries, a return visit is imminent.
