See The Storyteller Fountain in Birmingham, Alabama

A good story brings us all together. Outside the Methodist Church in the popular Five Points neighborhood of Birmingham is an intriguing piece of public art. It attracts both children and adults with its inquisitive and exquisitely crafted animal figures. What is The Storyteller Fountain trying to say?

A plaque sitting on the edge of the water reads:

“Storytelling is a deeply rooted Southern heritage. The animals are listening to a story intended to convey the idea of a peaceable kingdom. Fleming’s deep respect for the dignity and honesty found in nature is symbolized by these figures.”

A local urban legend interprets the work as satanic, due to the goats head on a human body. Some take the five frogs as a symbol of a pentagram. Controversial sentiments such as animal sacrifice and paganism have been thrown around. Regardless of what you believe the meaning behind this sculpture is, Alabama native Fleming created a magical piece of art that makes the viewer imagine.
