Visit Birmingham Alabama’s Rainbow Tunnel

Don’t hang out under the bridge. Dark, seedy, and susceptible to derelict company, tunnels are a place most people walk through quickly with unease. One artist sought to change that notion. Bill FitzGibbons had his eye on a 1931 Art Deco bridge – one which must have been a beauty in its heyday.

Before 2013 it had fallen into the ‘areas to avoid’ category, but now it is a bonafide destination. The Rainbow LED Tunnel on Birmingham’s 14th Street South is illuminated with a barrage of rainbow of LED lights!

The project is named LightRails and the computerized system can change the colors, speed, and aura of the tunnel – so visiting on different evenings can provide a different show.

There is a specific wide walkway for pedestrians, so feel encouraged to stroll through. Art transformed a space that the city forgot about into an Instagram sensation and made the world feel a bit safer. What a beautiful thing.
