Whether you’re looking for a day filled with hiking, picnicking, and kayaking – or just a quick stop, Desoto Falls State Park is worth your time and effort. While Alabama is filled with waterfalls, my favorite was the namesake of this preserve, Desoto Falls.
Easily accessed from the parking lot, just a short paved walk takes you to a viewing platform. Pass the scenic dam.
Look back to view the upper falls with the dam as a backdrop.
Then the main event: Desoto Falls has a 104 foot drop, in spring after a heavy rainfall it was bursting with power.
Look out at the trailing mist and deep green pool.
The waterfall was named for the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto who was one of the first Europeans to traverse the area. Above the falls the water is calm and there is a grassy area with picnic table and grills.
There are many miles of hiking trails in the park if you’re looking to extend your time.
