A true gem of the city, Knoxville Museum of Art showcases art and artists of East Tennessee. The museum has free admission and parking, it is a must see when in the area. One unique exhibit featured during my visit was digital art using LEDs to make colorful scenes, moving, and glowing.
Pulse Index was an interactive piece, when you put your finger into the device it reads your pulse and records your fingerprint.
I love contemporary art that uses technology to its advantage to create something never seen before. Going in the opposite direction, Marion Greenwood’s The History of Tennessee is a long mural illustrating the diverse music of the state.
Delta blues, country music, and religious music are represented walking the length of the painting. The collection of glass sculptures defy previous standards of what can be done with this material.
My favorite room held many contemporary pieces that were one of a kind, they really blew my mind. I was frightened a bit by how realistic silicone sculptures were, implanted with real hair one strand at a time. This grandmother holding her grandchild was eerily moving.
Tons of tiny plastic circles make a mosaic of the sea and sky, just walking by makes the whole piece blow and glimmer.
Random spools of thread flipped in the frame of a globe create an epic twist on the Mona Lisa.
With such a great collection, I could only imagine excellent exhibits in the future and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again when in Knoxville!
