Surprisingly, Polk isn’t a figure that is emphasized in American history classes. The 11th President of the United States had a large hand in shaping the nation we view today in a time called the Spirited Age he more than doubled the size of America during a span of four short years. President Polk State Historic Site is located on land that was owned by Polk’s parents.
Take the guided tour of a reconstructed version of Polk’s boyhood home, filled with authentic furnishings.
There is a log house, separate kitchen, and barn.
Learn how they lived on the farm where they grew cotton, tobacco, and other crops from 1794 till 1806 when they moved to Tennessee.
Inside the visitors center there is so much to take in covering the one term Polk served. His presidency was riddled with tumult.
Manifest destiny was the belief of the time and the president was determined to acquire California from Mexico. This led to the Mexican-American War not so long after the annexation of Texas. Not all Americans supported the war.
Going through the displays and watching the movie you can spend at least an hour learning about American history. Outside there is a short nature trail and the cemetery where Polk’s grandmother and other relatives are buried.
The site is free to visit and a short distance from Charlotte, NC. Check the calendar for cool events such as The Historic Kitchen: A Class on the Old Southern Way of Cooking and Music, Dance, n’ Que Festival. There are also Musket shooting demonstrations.
Definitely dont hear much about this President! Thanks for educating me 🙂
