If you are looking for a uniquely southern meal when visiting Charlotte NC, Haberdish offers truly inspired cuisine. The menu was filled with too many delectable sounding dishes, so we decided to split a bunch of appetizers and try as much as we could! North Carolina is known for its sweet potatoes, so when I saw sweet potato dumplings as an offering I couldn’t resist. Two of my favorite things combined. They are savory, but that’s what I want a dumpling to be…with a hint of sweet potato essence and amazing texture.
I dream of these dumplings! Jeff’s favorite dish was the loaded grits, not an ordinary side by any means. With cheese, bacon, chives this thick porridge was indulgently delicious.
Another NC specialty sounded a bit out of my comfort zone, but that made me want to try it even more! The livermush toast had many bold flavors almost masked the liver, but that was OK with me. It was set with rice and slathered in mustard, molasses, and butter pickles, atop a slice of bread. It was very good!
Pimento is the cheese sweetheart of the south, so a pimento cheese ball was in!-Served with refreshing with apple slices and crackers this was a fun interactive dish – very filling too.
For protein we went with the trout which was perfectly cooked, all the way to its crispy skin.
Leave room for dessert, because you’ll want to try the sonker. What is a sonker, you might ask? A truly North Carolinan dessert, a deep dish pie not to distantly related to a cobbler, but juicier.
Sonkers are cooked to order here so they take a bit of time, but they come out HOT and divine. You pour your milk over it and commence to devour every last morsel. A perfect finale. The restaurant does not take reservations but uses the No Wait app so you can add your name to the wait list before arriving. Located in the vibrant NoDa neighborhood, you’ll want to leave some time to explore the surrounding shops.
