While in the city of Brunswick, Georgia – I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate to eat than Brunswick Stew. I’m on the side of the ring which believes that the stew was created in Georgia, not Virginia. Heck, there is even a plaque commemorating the birth of the stew in 1898, with the original pot!
You can find it at Mary Ross Waterfront Park, park on F Street and the memorial is in front of the flagpole. This is also the site of the Brunswick Farmers Market which is held on Tuesdays and Fridays. No matter what you believe, don’t miss out on enjoying this delicious and comforting dish at Gary Lee’s Market [3636 US Hwy 82 Brunswick, GA 31523].
The stew begins with a tomato base, it is chock full of beans, vegetables, and meat. Truly traditional versions of the stew include meats such as squirrel, possum, or rabbit – however, today you’ll mostly find chicken or pork. It’s thicker consistency is why you couldn’t coin this bowl as a mere vegetable soup with meat added.
Gary Lee’s stew is rich and hearty, filled with flavor. With plenty of tender meat and so many fresh vegetables, there is never a dull bite. The market is a popular place to grab a plate of BBQ and grab meats from the butcher to take home.
There are all sorts of sides and even a few desserts and knickknacks for purchase. If you plan on dining it it’s clean and friendly, but no frills – order up at the counter and find a seat to eat.
Be aware that the market is only open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I hope to return soon and try some of the BBQ people were happily chowing down on.
