This is the place to get the pizza, beer, and watch the game. Whichever game it is you want because there are many TVs (15!!) with all of the games that could conceivably be on! Hill Street Café [180 Madison Ave, Albany, NY 12202] is just a little out of my walking range for dinner, but they have their own parking lot so that’s not a problem at all.
Growing up eating pizza in the Bronx was a blessing and a curse. A blessing because I hold pizza to high standards, but a curse because for more than half the years I’ve lived upstate I refused to eat pizza here! Then the wonderful revelation of tavern pies was exposed – and your neighborhood tavern has quite the excellent specimen. A great thick garlicky crust, topped with cream herb ricotta sauce, and the mozz.
Yes, this spot on the hill is perfect for my pizza craving and the pies are huge so you can have leftovers for the next day. Other than pizza there are plenty of pub food options, and don’t forget the beer, there are 20 on tap.
Woof!! Pizza won’t be my first choice when I visit Wisconsin one day :).
The “muttz”? “Mootz”? How can one pronounce it? Is the singular, “mut”?
.
At any rate, if you think Albany pizza falls short (I haven’t had it), wait until you get to Wisconsin! The recipe is Heinz 57 tomato sauce spread on Saltines; cheese topping, add Kraft wrapped-in-plastic slices .
.
Fortunately, there is so much else to eat there that is uniquely wonderful, what you can’t get doesn’t matter.
