On a sweltering summer day, nothing sounds sweeter than a dip in a secret swimming hole. They’re presently hard to come by, many of my old haunts are off limits, patrolled by police. Recently I was riding around Washington County and came upon a pretty rare and magical unicorn of a place, the Eagleville Covered Bridge [Eagleville Road, off of Binninger Road, Shushan NY]. A classic covered bridge from 1858, interesting enough just for that fact, but made extraordinarily special in the summertime doubling as a swimming hole.
No ‘keep out’ signs here, just be mindful of the parking signs, pick a legal spot, and BE RESPECTFUL. There is a rope swing and a spot to jump off into the deep, cool, Battenkill River.
The scenery was lush and gorgeous on a hot July day and there were plenty of friendly locals swimming, jumping, and having a grand ole time.If you’re looking for other legal swimming holes, try out Big Deep in Woodstock or Dorset Quarry in Dorset, Vermont for an adventurous cool down!
There were a lot of kids swimming there when we went, so I think you should be good!
Is it good for little kids?
