The last town we stopped in on the way home was Asbury Park, NJ. My mom is a huge Bruce fan so we had to swing by to take a look at the Stone Pony where his career took off. I didn’t realize how much funk there would be in this area.
I would love to revisit in the summer sunshine to hit the beach and explore more! By now it was dark, we were tired and hungry as can be, in dire need of some fuel before our last zany activity. The Speakeatery [705 Cookman Ave Asbury Park, NJ 07712] was an oasis of light in the night. I have nothing but praise. I dug the kitschy décor and brightly colored walls.
It is a gourmet market so order up at the counter and your food will be brought to your table. While I was waiting I looked around at all of the goodies for sale.
Local items, old school items, a nice arrangement of things…but before I knew it the food was ready and I was in for a real treat. I ordered the B’s Knees which was beyond exceptional.
A black bean burger with pepper jack cheese, cilantro lime mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion, and avocado served on a toasted and buttered roll. The colors, the flavors, the freshness, it was out of control. So tired from the days of traveling I was almost ready to call it quits and just head right home. This sandwich revitalized my entire being and gave me the energy to keep going! It was messy, it was delicious, it was undoubtedly the best black bean burger I have ever had.
