When I heard that there was going to be a Norman Rockwell exhibit at The Hyde Collection [161 Warren Street, Glens Falls, NY 12801] I was all in.
I had recently fell in love with his work at another nearby museum, and it turns out most of the work seemed to be on loan from said museum so I had already seen it. No worries, because without this draw I might not have made it to a pretty interesting place. An art museum in a historic home, each room curated with care. I would suggest watching the orientation video first to get an idea of how the collection works together, and the family that brought it to Glens Falls. I’ve become a fan of smaller art museums which are better for my attention span.
Walk slowly through the rooms of this Italian Renaissance-style villa and take in each detail of this intimate space. You’ll find an eclectic arrangement of items ranging from paintings, sculptures, and decorative art.
One of my favorite oddities was a group of ornate thimbles. Be on the look out for works from names such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and Picasso.
When you are finished surveying the art, make sure you take a look through the gift shop. Even if you don’t see anything you want to purchase, grab a free coloring book and remember your visit for days to come.
If you visit during nice weather be sure to check out the outside butterfly garden in the back of the museum. PS if you grab a museum pass from the Albany Public Library you can visit for free!
