Mio Vino is a smooth and sophisticated joint you wouldn’t quite expect to be on the main drag in rural Altamont [186 Main St, Altamont, NY 12009]. As out of place as it may seem nestled between mom and pop country-esque shops, the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night! There are a few outdoor seats for when the weather gets a bit warmer, inside there is a bar, and the restaurant is deceptively big. Walking into the front dining room you wouldn’t guess of the cavernous nature, but following our waiter we discovered there are multiple alcoves of dining rooms. We were seated in a quiet dark corner and enjoyed listening to the jazz and nibbling on some garlic knots and bread with oil.
We ordered the crab cake appetizer and these were among the cream of the crop. Delicately fried and cradled on a nest of thick remoulade.
Savory chunks of meat were brightened with fresh lemon and a small colorful salad. My meal came out beautifully presented with a plumeria blossom – reminiscent of my recent trip to Hawaii.
The halibut was cooked to perfection, and it was a huge serving. The coconut curry sauce was had me dreaming back to my island paradise. I loved finding hidden veggies as I explored my rice. Jeff got an intense burger with a pretzel like bun,
and we were both too stuffed for dessert! Service, food, and atmosphere were top notch – this is definitely a place to visit while out in Altamont.
