Wowee I can’t believe it took me so long to get here. Pizza from DeFazio’s has been on my list of things to eat for ages (266 4th Street Troy, NY 12180). For some reason I hate making the trip to Troy (probably because of street parking), but always have the best time when I do. I have to get over that, just a hop skip and a jump on 787 and I’m a world away from Albany. There are so many great shops and restaurants, and this pizza place is definitely one of the best of them. Tips: you can’t get a slice here, you have to bring cash, BYOB, and closed on Sundays. It’s not what I expected, but also more than I expected. The restaurant is really tiny, you may want to make a reservation if you eat in. We were lucky to grab one of two remaining tables. Their menu has more than just pizza, but since it was our first time we wanted to see what all the rage was about. We ordered two of the small pizzas and would have been completely fine with just one between two people. You pick the type of dough and toppings from a variety of great choices. You can split one pizza with two different toppings. I got a chicken pesto on garlic and herb crust; Jeff got the meat lovers on the Brown’s Brewing brown ale. The wait was a few minutes longer than your average pizza, but it was being made fresh and then roasted in a wood fired oven. The pizzas are served on a big silver platter and they will make you really happy and ready to take a nap post-feast. You can tell the ingredients are fresh and that a lot of care is put into everything. My garlic crust was soft and chewy, toppings were delicately added and balanced harmoniously. Jeff’s pizza combination worked so well. The sweetness of the brown ale in the crust was wonderful and paired perfectly with the generous chunks of meat. The pies felt artistic. It was a bit expensive for pizza, but we each got our own pie and had dinner for the next day too. We could have cut the price in half by splitting one pizza also, and still been totally satisfied. You get what you pay for this is quality stuff.
