The New York State Museum is one of my favorite places.

In the winter it is a warm refuge, and in the summer it is air-conditioned oasis. It is a fantastic place to bring a visiting friend, and also to catch any new exhibit floating in. You can spend hours wandering through its plethora of exhibits, and you might actually learn something, for free!
I may be the only person whose favorite exhibit is the Birds of New York. I love birds! Bird watching, hearing birds sing, and learning about birds, so this exhibit is ideal for my strange needs. Every time I’m in the museum I walk through and try to find a new bird to study and remember. You may prefer the Native American Longhouse, or the Cohoes Mastodon, to each his own.
If you are visiting the museum with children, or you are just young at heart like myself, don’t leave without taking a trip up the escalators to ride the Carousel. It is great fun, beautiful scenery, and the horses have marbles for eyes (it is free too!).
