Albany winters are long and dreary. I try to travel a lot during this time, and when I’m not traveling I am dreaming of doing so.
On one particular afternoon with nothing to do, a friend and I visited Parivar Spices and Food up Central Ave. While we were there she remarked that she felt she had traveled to India for the day. As neither of us are of Indian decent, we took to the joint from an anthropological viewpoint. We enjoyed strolling up and down the isles of groceries and seeing foods there were strange and different to us daydreaming of a distant land. In the back is where the real hidden treasure is.
Delicious smells were coming from the kitchen in plain view, and the menu had all sorts of ideas I had never previously conceptualized. My friend pushed me into being adventurous saying she was going to order something she had never heard of before, so she got a Chaat dish and I got a Dosa dish. We shared some vegetarian Samosas and got Masala tea too. The food was so good, and there was SO much of it.
