One of Alabama’s four National Forests, Bankhead National Forest, is known as the land of a thousand waterfalls. It is located in northwestern Alabama a bit off the beaten path, under an hour and a half from Birmingham and Huntsville, and less than that from Decatur. There are many trails within the park which spans 181,230 acres, but if you only have time for one be sure to hike to Caney Creek Falls.
It is one and a half miles down to the falls, the trail begins on a gravel path gradually descending 200’. That makes the entire hike a three mile round trip, save a bit of energy for climbing the hill back up to the small parking lot. The walk is easy with a wide and flat surface until you reach the creek. There it becomes rooted, steep, and a bit unclear.
Following the sound of rushing water, I made my way to the top of the falls – unable to see it in its entirety.
Backtracking to the path, descend to the creek and if you do not see the waterfall, head upstream to the sound of water.
The small inconvenience was well worth the sight of this truly otherworldly waterfall.
Water so deep and green, almost florescent, and after spring rains a perfect cascade. A narrow trail leads right up to the falls.
And even behind it!
This magical gem was devoid of people, with little cell reception. On the hike back up it was more clear to see where the path should have led, had I followed it properly. Enjoy this special place responsibly and leave no trace.
