A ride on a ferry to a rare forest and a secluded beach? Count me in. Sunken Forest is located on Fire Island, a place where your car cannot go. Park it and hop on the ferry from Sayville towards Sailors Haven [Sayville Ferry Service 41 River Rd, Sayville, NY 11782]. Enjoy the beautiful breezy ride on the bay. Admire the homes and sailboats along the way.
When you arrive on the island check out the visitor’s center where there are a lot of interesting objects to teach you about the ecology of the trails you are about to enter, and even a park ranger or two to answer any questions you may have.
The trails are 1½ miles out and back through a 300 year old maritime holly forest.
There are ranger led tours, or you can walk the boardwalk in this unique environment at your own leisure. Keep your eyes open for wildlife amongst the shrubbery and freshwater bogs. We spotted a plump and healthy looking frog along the way.
When you are finished hiking find a secluded spot on the pristine long and wide beach, or if you have kids grab a spot by the lifeguards.
Just make sure you’re back to the port for the last ferry home!
