Catskills Eats: Last Chance Cheese Antiques and Café

The Catskills have just got the funkiest places; I recently had a fantastic lunch at Last Chance Cheese Antiques and Café in the town of Tannersville (6009 Main Street, Tannersville, NY 12485). We had just come from a hike and were hungry (story of our lives) and this place so fit the bill. We walked in and chose to sit in a side room surrounded by windows so we could watch the snow falling outside. Lovely! Interesting decorations about too. IMG_3059We were brought a basket of bread and promptly got our orders taken by an attentive waitress. If you are thirsty they have over 300 beers to choose from. I couldn’t get anything but the ‘knish-wich’ – what an ingenious idea! It was delightfully executed as well. The hot knish was cut in half and stuffed with your choice of meat, I got turkey, and slathered with sweet coleslaw and Swiss cheese. IMG_3062I had no idea how to attack this thing, I ended up cutting it with a fork and knife into bits and then picking it up and embracing the mess. It was a killer sandwich and created total contentment for the ride home (good thing too because there was a big accident on a slippery road which doubled our driving time!). I wasn’t thinking straight and subsisted pasta salad for French fries which were just so-so (with my potato knish), silly me, but I wouldn’t have had room for any side dish as I was totally stuffed. Jeff got a Reuben which he also enjoyed, and we popped into their little store before we headed out. IMG_3061I wish we had more time to look around the store but the weather was getting worse so it was just a quick browse. IMG_3063They had all sorts of old school candy and local products for sale, worth a visit in itself! Such a fun and different place to eat if you find yourself down in the Catskills.
