A trip to Hudson, NY

A trip to Hudson is a great little getaway, a scenic trip less than an hour away.

A visit to Olana can make you forget the world you’re leaving behind. The grounds are beautiful abundant in nature, and free to wander if you just want to take a hike on the trails. The gift shop is free to look around as well, and has many interesting items for sale.

With stellar views and wildly beautiful architecture there is no difficulty in imagining where artist Frederic Church got his inspiration. To enter the house you must pay admission, and inside no pictures are allowed. Lavish decorations and artwork are on display for you to see and a knowledgeable tour guide takes you through the home teaching you about Church.

After you enjoy your time here you may be hungry. A real great place to stop in town is Tanzy’s. They do lunch, breakfast, afternoon tea, and everything is scrumptious and it feels like home. I had an iced prickly pear tea with a buffalo chicken salad. My salad was great and had artichoke hearts, peppers, fresh tomatoes and lettuce, I really enjoyed it.

After lunch you might want to walk to the river and gaze out at the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, walk around the park. Then poke in the many antique, thrift, and boutique shops, there are a lot of interesting items to ponder about. You may be lucky enough to meet this bird flying about a particular shop.

Enjoy the architecture, and the murals around town.

Browse some books and have a beer at the Spotty Dog. You don’t have to sit at the bar (but you can), you can cozy up in a corner chair with an appealing book you found and relax. Maybe if you’re lucky or you plan it right you’ll catch some live music.

Perhaps you’re getting hungry again and want to stop at Mexican Radio for dinner (a new one is opening closer to home in Schenectady, soon!). Great food, drinks, and don’t forget about dessert. I got pumpkin flan, and it had toasted pumpkin seeds on top. So good, dare I say, flan-tastic!

If you want to try a different establishment for dessert, I highly recommend Lick. This is an ice cream shop with really interesting flavors such as Fig & Sweet Cream, Gingersnap Molasses, Sublime Lime, and Beet. My friend got a Thai Coconut Peanut that we still talk about; it was so obscure and excellent!

There is so much to do and see, so close to home. Visit Hudson!

  1. cats and vintage clothing? you know me too well.

  2. Also there is a vintage clothing store, Five and Diamond (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Five-and-Diamond-Vintage/34216442679) with the most insanely awesome stuff to ogle for fun.

  3. Next time you’re in Hudson you should go to Animal Kind (http://www.animalkind.info/) Its a rescue/shelter for cats, and they wander freely among several rooms in a converted house. They’ll let you go in and just play with the cats.
